A more vintage view of 521 Fifth Ave. South. This photo may
have been taken around 1991 or earlier. The home was built
around the 1860's and was first owned by Issac Garettson.
Later it was sold to David and Mark Elsbach, dry good
merchants. Then in 1869, it was purchased by Jacob
Bloomstein, a cigar and grocery merchant. Bloomstein was
previously thrown into a federal prison and all his goods and
property were seized during the Union occupation of Nashville
for taking food to the confederate prisoners at a work camp
near his home. Bloomstein had 10 children. In 1927 the home
was purchased by the Nashville Branch of the Workmen's
Circle, a Jewish charitable group.
