This home was located at the corner of Academy Place and Carroll
Street across from the Carroll Street Methodist Church. The house
was constructed by Dr. Augustin Gattinger, State Botanist, and later,
the State Librarian from 1864 to1869. Dr. Gattinger had left
Germany with George Dury, founder of the Dury's Photographic
Studios and later married Dury's sister Josaphine.  When workers
were excavating the basement for this home, a large and rare
prehistoric fossil fell at Dr. Gattinger's feet. A plaster cast of this
fossil was requested by the Smithsonian Institute. This home was
purchased by William and Margaret Gray in 1938 who lived there
until the 1950's.
