Number 701 4th Ave. So. at the southwest corner of Elm Street.
The building was built in the 1890's and was first used as a
general merchandice store. It was sold in 1907 to a stone mason
and sculptor. This structure was used through the 1950's as a
monument and sculpture business and workshop with the
owner's quarters on the second floor. The owner was Sculptor,
Giovacchino Matei.  Matei was one of the sculptors would
worked on the frieze of the parthenon and was responsible for
casting the concrete seated budda in the sunken gardens at
centennial park during the rebuilding of the park after the
Centennial celebration.  It was not unusual to pass by the
building in  the 1950's and see workers covered from head to
toe in white dust.
